Ski-Erg Efficiency: Physics Always Beats Aggression on the Erg

Share

I often see people approach the Ski-Erg with raw aggression—pulling as hard as possible with their arms, gasping for air. This is an energy leak that will red-line your heart rate in seconds and leave you exhausted before the work is done. To win on the Erg, you must use physics. The power on the Ski-Erg does not come from your biceps; it comes from your hips and your midline. It is essentially a hinged movement. By using your body weight to crunch the handles down, you are engaging the largest and most powerful muscles in your body to drive the flywheel.

Efficiency is free power. By mastering the 'Software' of the machine, you can produce higher output with less systemic cost. To master this, you must stop trying to 'pull' the handles with your arms and start using your body weight to drive the movement through a powerful hip hinge. During your next warm-up, spend 2 minutes on the Ski-Erg focusing only on your hips. Keep your arms passive for the first 10 strokes. Use your body weight to fall into the handles, hinging your hips back as you go. Move with the composure of an athlete, not the desperation of a spectator. When you find the rhythm, the watts go up while the heart rate stays manageable. Use the hinge and let the physics do the heavy lifting.
