Is CrossFit Safe Over Fifty? An Answer From an Amersham Coach
I get asked this in the car park about once a week, usually by someone in their fifties, usually with an apology attached to the question. Yes. And I'll answer it from the register rather than from theory.
We've been coaching people over fifty in this building since 2016. Not one or two — they're in every class we run. The 9:30 is full of them. There are people training here in their sixties, and people who started here in their late fifties having done nothing since school, still training, still adding weight to the bar.
What makes CrossFit unsafe is bad coaching, and load applied faster than a body can adapt to it. Those are the two failure modes, and both sit with the coach. What you've seen on the internet — a room throwing themselves at heavy barbells with terrible technique while somebody shouts — exists, and it's exactly why we do the opposite.
So, a fifty-five-year-old walks in. You start on Ignite: classes from the first week, with five one-to-one sessions running alongside them. In those we learn what your shoulders will do, the knee, the back, the surgery you had in 2019, and we build from there. In class, every session is scaled to you — your version, with the weight and movement that puts you at the same relative intensity as everyone else. And the coach is watching.
Now the other half. There is a risk. Lifting weights carries a real risk of a strained back or an irritated shoulder. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. I've had injuries. So have our coaches.
That risk has to be weighed against the alternative. Doing nothing is not the safe option. From about fifty you lose muscle and bone steadily unless something tells your body to keep them — and nothing tells your body to keep them like lifting something heavy. What takes people's independence at eighty is a hip fracture, a fall, a chair they can't get out of. Those have a cause, and the cause is thirty years of not loading the system.
So it comes down to which risk you're taking. One you can manage with good coaching. The other is coming for you anyway.
The over-fifties in our classes aren't an exception. They're most of the room.
