Can't Run to the End of Your Road? You're Fit Enough for CrossFit

Can't run to the end of your road? You're fit enough for CrossFit.

The beauty of CrossFit is that it produces the fittest on earth — those athletes you see on social media. But those are the top of the mountain. The amazing thing about CrossFit is that it can be scaled, so you can start at that mountain's base and take your first step.

My opinion is that most fitness classes only cater for the middle. Choreographed classes like spin and body pump have you working for 30 to 60 minutes straight, regardless of your fitness. Circuit classes nearly always have limits on equipment, which means the top and bottom athletes aren't fully catered for. And when the bottom is catered for, there's a ceiling where the fittest can only be challenged by going faster — they can't be tested on strength or skill. This is where people lose interest.

CrossFit doesn't have that ceiling, or that floor. Every movement is scaled to the person doing it: the weight, the reps, the range, the version of the skill. So the person who can't yet run to the end of their road and the person who can deadlift twice their bodyweight train the same session, in the same room, each one properly worked. One does a box squat to a height that suits them with an appropriate weight; the other loads the bar. Both did the workout. Neither hit a wall the session couldn't move.

That's why "I'm not fit enough" is the one worry that doesn't apply here. There's no level of unfit that the session can't be built around — the base of the mountain is exactly where we start you, one to one, here in Amersham, before you're ever in a room with anyone else. The first step is smaller than you think.

So if you can't run to the end of your road yet, that isn't a reason to stay away from a gym. In CrossFit, it's the reason it works — because the session meets you there and moves with you. The athletes on your screen started at the base too. The only difference is they took the first step.
