What Actually Happens in Your First Class at a Chiltern CrossFit Gym
The fear of a first class is almost never about the exercise. It's about the unknown elements — where to stand, what the words mean, whether everyone else already knows something you don't, and whether there'll be a moment where the whole room turns and watches you fail at something. If that's the picture in your head, it's worth replacing with what actually happens, because the real thing is far less dramatic.
First, before you come to class, you'll have had a free chat and at least one session one-to-one with a coach, learning the handful of movements the sessions are built on, at your own pace. By the time you arrive at your first proper class, you already know the basics.
When you arrive, you'll find a whiteboard with the day's session on it and a coach who knows your name and that you're new — we're a small gym in a unit off Raans Road, not a turnstile. The class starts with a warm-up everyone does together, then the coach walks the whole room through each movement and, crucially, through the easier versions of it. This is the bit worth understanding: every workout has scales built in. If the board says pull-ups and you can't do a pull-up, the coach gives you a band or a ring row, and you do the version that challenges you. Most people scale something. The person beside you might be on the hardest version and you on the gentlest — and you're both doing the workout. Nobody's doing it wrong.
Then there's the part people quietly worry about most: being watched. The truth is, during the session everyone is entirely occupied with their own effort — managing their own breathing, getting through their own hard minutes. The idea that a room full of people has the spare attention to scrutinise the new person is a story you tell yourself. What you'll actually notice, if anything, is the opposite — someone you've never met telling you you're nearly there in the last round, because that's the culture of the place and it tends to surprise people.
You'll finish about an hour after you arrived, probably warmer and more out of breath than you've been in a while, and more often than not, slightly annoyed at yourself for putting it off for so long. The session that lived in your head as an ordeal turns out to be sixty minutes of being coached, scaled, and encouraged by people who remember their first day.
None of this requires you to be fit, coordinated, or confident. It requires you to turn up once, having had a conversation first. The rest is our job.
