Rebuilding the Weekly Shop Before Term Starts

Three weeks until term. Which means three weeks until the 7:15am kitchen, the packed lunches, and the question that ruins more nutrition plans than any takeaway: what are we eating tonight.

Your food decisions on a Tuesday evening are made by a version of you who's tired, has been in back-to-backs since nine, driven to Chesham and back, and has forty minutes before someone needs to be somewhere. That version can't be trusted with a decision, and you won't out-think them. So don't ask them to. Make the decision once, on Saturday, and let it hold for the week.

This happens before you get to the shops.

Buy protein for every dinner before anything else. Seven dinners, seven proteins, in the trolley first. Chicken thighs, mince, salmon, eggs, a bag of frozen prawns. If the protein's in the house, the meal happens. If it isn't, the takeaway does.

Buy vegetables you'll actually eat, frozen where it helps. Frozen peas, spinach and broccoli are nutritionally excellent and they don't rot in the drawer as a monument to good intentions.

Buy the easy breakfast. This is the meal that collapses first when term starts and the one that sets up the day. Greek yoghurt and berries, oats, eggs. Enough for five mornings.

Buy the thing that stops the 4pm collapse. Not a discipline problem — you've eaten a sandwich at 12:30 and nothing since, and your body is asking for fuel reasonably. Something with protein in the desk drawer or the car. That's a repair, not a treat.

When you cook, the plate method: half the plate vegetables, a palm of protein, a cupped handful of carbohydrate, a thumb of fat. No weighing, ever. If your plate looks like that most nights, you've solved most of the problem.

Two habits that survive September. Cook once, eat twice — whenever you cook, make double, and tomorrow's lunch is free and Thursday's crisis is solved. It's the highest-return habit in the kitchen and it costs ten minutes on a Sunday. And do the shop before term starts, not during it. The first week of September is the worst week of the year to build a new habit. Build the pattern now, while the weeks are still empty, so it's already running when term hits.

Three weeks. One shop a week. Get the decisions done on Saturday and Tuesday takes care of itself.
