Lifting Heavy Won't Make You Bulky. Here's What It Does.
The single most common reason women give me for not touching the heavy weights is that they're afraid of getting bulky. Big. Manly. So they stay on the light dumbbells and the cross-trainer, doing the one thing that won't get them what they actually want.
Here's the truth, and it's a relief: you will not get bulky by accident. Building that kind of size takes a large amount of testosterone — women have a fraction of what men do, ten to twenty times less — plus a deliberate calorie surplus and years of training aimed squarely at getting big. The women you've seen who look that way didn't stumble into it. It is very hard to do on purpose, and impossible to do by turning up to a couple of classes a week.
Now the bit that catches people out. The lean, strong look most people mean when they say "toned" is simply muscle with a bit less fat over it. You build that muscle by lifting something challenging — not by doing thirty reps with a pink dumbbell. High reps with a light weight is the least effective route to the exact thing you're after.
But I'd rather you cared about what it does than how it looks, because that's the part that changes your life.
Lifting heavy is the most effective non-medical thing there is for a woman's bone density — which matters enormously through the menopause years, when bone is lost fast. It's what keeps you carrying your own shopping, your own suitcase, your own grandchildren, into your seventies and eighties. It's the difference between a fall being a fright and a fall being a fracture. Strong women stay independent longer.
So, this week: stop fearing the heavy weights. Pick a weight where the last two or three reps of a set are genuinely hard — that's the signal you're building something. Add a little over time. Eat enough protein to build on, which for most women is far more than they currently do — 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilo of bodyweight. And do it twice a week for a year.
I've coached hundreds of women through this gym. Not one has ever come to me upset that she got too strong. The ones who lift heavy are, without exception, the happiest with how they feel and what their bodies can do.
Lift heavy. You won't get bulky. You'll get strong.
