What Two Sessions a Week Buys You

The question comes up near the end of most first phone calls, usually apologetically. What's the minimum? People expect to be told five.

Two is enough to change things.

For strength, a beginner training twice a week gets the large majority of the adaptation available from three or four. The dose-response curve is steep at the start and flattens quickly — the gap between zero and two sessions is enormous, and the gap between two and three is modest. If you're new, or coming back after years, two hard hours a week will make you measurably stronger for a year or more before the frequency starts to matter much.

For your engine, what counts is intensity rather than hours. Two sessions with hard efforts in them will move your aerobic capacity. Somebody doing five easy hours a week and never getting out of breath will improve less.

Where two isn't enough is skill. Gymnastics, olympic lifting, anything that's a motor pattern rather than a physical quality — those need exposure, and three sessions will build them roughly twice as fast as two. That's the trade you're making — not fitness, not strength, but how quickly you learn things.

Commit to two sessions. If you can, have the same two slots every week, booked in advance. Two sessions that move around the diary often end up being one.

Put a 30-minute walk on two other days as well. Not as training — it just keeps you moving on the days you're not in.

What I'd say on the phone: tell me two and mean it, rather than tell me four and manage three for a fortnight. It's the same principle Dr Amy uses on our nutrition and lifestyle programme. Build a habit that feels easy at first. Establish early successes and then complexity later on.

Two is enough. Three is faster. The number that doesn't work is the five you were never going to do.
