The Sandbag: No Handles, No Bounce
A sandbag is the least sophisticated thing in the gym and one of the most useful. No handles, no balance point, no bounce, and it shifts while you carry it.
A sandbag is the least sophisticated thing in the gym and one of the most useful. No handles, no balance point, no bounce, and it shifts while you carry it.
That is the benefit: A barbell is a fixed, predictable object designed to be lifted in one plane. A sandbag behaves like the things you pick up outside a gym — a child, a suitcase, a bag of compost, someone else's furniture, your partner?
Three things it teaches that a bar does not.
Bracing under something unstable. The load moves as you move, so your midline has to keep responding rather than hold one shape.
Getting it off the floor without a grip. You cannot grip a sandbag. You get under it, hug it, and stand up with your legs. That is the pattern that we need everyday.
Carrying while breathing hard. A carry at the end of a workout tests whether your bracing survives fatigue. Plus the placement of these odd objects can be restrictive on your breath, an incredible benefit from a level of discomfort. Better to find out here than on a staircase with a washing machine.
Technique. Chest against it before you pull. Hands underneath, not round the sides. Hips down, then stand — it comes up your thighs and onto your chest rather than swinging out in front of you. On the carry, keep it high and tight. Every centimetre it slides down costs you.
A rounded upper back holding the bag is fine. A rounded lower back is not, and it is why we watch this one more closely than most. Learning how to brace properly is key.
Pick the bag you can stand up with cleanly on the last rep, not the first. Plus if you’ve never done this before start light for your first few sessions. My favourite phrase is “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!”
