Starting CrossFit in Amersham When You Haven't Trained in Years
If you've driven past our unit on Raans Road and wondered what goes on in there, then talked yourself out of finding out, this is for you.
People picture the internet version of CrossFit: ripped twenty-five-year-olds throwing barbells around a warehouse. That exists. It isn't us. The typical 9:30 class in Amersham is a woman in her fifties who came back after a knee replacement, a man who runs a business in Chesham and hasn't done anything structured since school, a couple of parents straight off the drop-off at St George's, and maybe the odd ripped 30-year-old!
The fear that you'll be the least fit person there is the most common thing anyone says to me on a first call. I'd guess three-quarters of the people currently training with us said some version of it before they started.
Every session is coached and every session is scaled. Scaling doesn't mean you do a lesser version while everyone else does the real one. The session has an intended purpose — an effort over a certain time — and the coach picks the weight, the movement and the range that gets the intended result. The person doing ring rows and the person doing pull-ups are doing the same workout. They finish together. That's the beauty of it.
You start on Ignite. You're in class from your first week — every class is catered for beginners as much as experienced athletes — and running alongside it you get five one-to-one hours with a coach. We teach you the movements from scratch. We find out what your shoulders and hips do. You do five benchmark workouts and test lifts, whatever your starting point, so that in six months you have numbers to compare against.
What do you wear? Trainers and something you can move in. Will you be sick? No — you'll be out of breath, not broken. Nobody is trying to break you.
Every month you spend meaning to get back into it is a month you could be getting fitter. I've watched it happen to a lot of people who joined and wished they'd done it a decade earlier.
Start where you are. We meet you there.
